Spending Christmas in Exeter

December 29, 2017 by admin

Christmas is right around the corner, and this year it might be time to visit a criminally underrated and under-visited place in the UK. Full of charm and personality, Exeter is primarily known as a cathedral city in the south west, but it’s also so much more.

Exeter has many attractions, and because of the city’s modest size, they’re all in a moderate walk distance away. Make sure to check out the best Christmas party venues Exeter has to offer, because you’re guaranteed to have a splendid time.

The Exeter Cathedral

Known as one of the oldest and exquisite cathedrals in all of England, it’s located in the centre of the city, and it’s stood there for almost one thousand years. The original Norman Cathedral was replaced in the 13th and 14th century, but the looming towers still remain from the original structure, while the rest of the gothic cathedral has remained mostly unchanged.

The Cathedral is the crown jewel of Devon County, and it’s the seat of the Bishop and the Mother Church of Diocese. It’s a remarkable feat of engineering, design, and craftsmanship, and is a history lesson all on its own. It’s served as a pilgrimage spot for centuries, and remains one of the most visited places in the West Country.

Do some Christmas shopping

As it is always the case with Christmas, you might want to do some shopping that goes along with the season. Well, if that’s the case, then Exeter has you covered. There are plenty of shopping venues to choose from, and they often organise dedicated Christmas shopping weekend, and sometimes even full weeks depending on the year. Places like the Fayre and the Christmas Markets offer some fantastic Christmas shopping that can rarely be matched anywhere else.

Visit a Christmas Event

Every year there are several Christmas events to choose from, and almost all the time they also act as charity fundraisers for various charities and causes. You can attend the many parties that are being thrown all across the city, or if you’re a fan of wrestling, then you see the Christmas wrestling show, or even visit one of the many lively rave parties that regularly happen on and around Christmas. Whatever you choose, you’re bound to have tonnes of fun.

But that’s not all about Exeter, in fact, the city offers plenty of other low-key activities due to its ripe culture and history. It has an amazing library for those that prefer something more academic in nature, but also unique and interesting museums like the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. If you’re a family with kids, then you might want to check out the Crealy Great Adventure Park and its rides – it’s fun for all groups and ages.

But best of all, spending Christmas in Exeter is almost always a trip that’s definitely never going to be forgotten. It’s a place filled with love and warmth that you’ll want to visit over and over again.

Park Guell – Gaudi has left his mark on the city and one of the most iconic pieces of Catalan modernism can be seen at Park Guell, originally designed as a private park this park later became a municipal park. Barcelona isn’t just a hotbed for modernist buildings but there are a huge amount of fantastic architectural wonders from earlier times too. The Ways of the People in Nigeria

September 30, 2017 by admin

Source

Nigeria has an ancient culture that has existed for thousands of years. Some 500 different ethnic groups make up the country, each of which have their own history. The country has three major tribes, but also many minority tribes. The cultural heritage in each of these groups, passed down from father to son and mother to daughter, is tremendous.

Esther Nenadi Usman, who is the former finance minister from the state of Southern Kaduna, has been particularly interested in the cultural influences of Nigeria on the woman. As Senator Nenadi Esther, and particularly because she worked as a minister in the economic and financial arena, people could be forgiven for saying that she very much wears the trousers. Interestingly, however, up to the 1990s, it was classed as irresponsible for a woman to wear trousers at all. In Kaduna, women would wear gowns or skirts and blouses below the knees, using tie wraps should they so wish.

Today, however, Usman is happy to see that some 70% of women wear trousers. In fact, they even wear them to church! This does not mean that Nigerian culture is disappearing. Nenadi simply believes that there is a place for culture, and there is a place for practicality. The same is seen in men, actually. Esther reminds people that men were not allowed to have any long hair or to weave or plat it. Furthermore, men were not allowed to have beards. Today, men are allowed to style their hair in whatever way they see fit.

Marriage in Nigeria

One area in which Nenadi Esther Usman has seen tradition is still very strong in Nigeria, is in marriage. Women are expected to marry between the ages of 24 and 31. Any older than that, they are classed as liabilities. This means that she would continue to have daughter rights, but she would no longer be as accepted. What has changed, according to Esther Usman, is that few people continue to follow customary law for marriages, which means that a man is introduced to a daughter as a husband. Some elements of this tradition, such as the telling of a funny story, are perhaps to be cherished, but Nenadi Esther strongly believes in choice. She herself became Esther Nenadi Usman after marrying her Muslim husband, this despite her being Christian herself.

Other family traditions are also being questioned. For instance, the woman is traditionally responsible for looking after the family, although the man is classed as the owner of any children. Women look after the home, doing 90% of the housework, whereas men go out to work and earn the money to pay the bills. Esther Usman clearly changed this.

Certain traditions in Nigeria are to be applauded and maintained, even if it is just for the sake of cultural heritage. Others, however, have to become more fluid because of advancing times. Women, for instance, must become more empowered, something that Nenadi has been personally invested in. She has shown the country that a woman can take on any role, and she hopes that others will be inspired by her.

Essential Tips on How to Have a Great Family Vacation in LA

September 3, 2017 by admin

So, you’ve decided that you want to take the family for a vacation in LA. You know what you want to do and have already found one of the Los Angeles vacation rentals that’s going to be perfect for you and the kids. But, there’s one nagging feeling at the back of your mind. And that’s all about how you can make sure that everyone one is happy and has the best time on their vacation. If you’re in this position, don’t worry. We’ve all been there and experienced this at some point. Here are some essential tips on how to have the perfect family vacation in Los Angeles.

What Makes LA a Great Destination for Families?

The main reason is that LA has so many things to keep everyone in the family entertained and interested for the length of the trip. You can find something that suits pretty much any age and even the more resilient of teens will enjoy some of the activities. But, as parents, we all know that there’s a fine line between having a perfect trip and an absolute disaster! Let’s have a look at what you should do.

Plan, Plan, Plan:

Planning is one of the most important parts of having a successful and stress-free family vacation. The more time you take at the start by coming up with a suitable itinerary to keep everyone happy, the smoother it will be when you arrive. It’s also a good idea to read recent reviews on blogs or TripAdvisor to get an idea of any unexpected things that may pop-up so that you’ll be more prepared.

Plan what you want to do each day and draft up an itinerary to keep things organized. You should also consider spending a full day at the theme parks. One of the most important things to do is to plan carefully and not to overdo it with the different activities. The last thing anyone wants is to start off at breakneck speed to find themselves exhausted on the third day.

Start Your Day as Early as Possible:

When you’re on vacation, it can be difficult to drag yourself out of bed at 7 am. We all want to stay in bed until 11 am when we’re not working, right? But, this isn’t a good idea if you’re planning a day of sightseeing. The crowds typically start to come in the late morning and early afternoon. This means that you may be faced with long waits if you don’t get there early enough.

Quite simply, the best thing to do is to aim to avoid the crowds as much as possible. This means there will be less stress for you and the kids won’t get bored whilst waiting in the long lines. And the earlier you start, the earlier you finish, which means you can then have more time relaxing later in the day.

Take Advantage of Early Bird Deals and Offers:

A savvy parent will look online before taking their family vacation to see what early bird tickets and promotions are available. The better ones will give you a discount and allow you to skip the line. This is one of the best features of booking in advance because who wants to spend hours standing in the queue to get into the attraction?

Always Book a Hotel with Breakfast Included:

One of the top ways to make the most out of the time when you’re on vacation is to book a hotel or resort that offers a buffet breakfast. This saves you both time and money in the morning and the day will typically start off in a positive light. Compare this to waking up early and then spending 30 minutes walking around the street to find a place to get some food. If you’re staying at a vacation rental, consider stocking up on food from the supermarket for breakfast. This also helps you to leave at the earlier times to avoid the crowds and long lines later on.

Allocate at Least One Day to Relax:

There’s nothing wrong with spending a few hours relaxing around the pool. It’s a good idea to find your accommodation in a place that’s near the beach or has a pool at the very least. One day of relaxing will be perfect for everyone. And the best part is, you don’t have to plan the day!

Choose the Activities to Suit Everyone in Your Family:

Just because you and the spouse want to see Hollywood or visit some of the museums, it doesn’t mean that the kids or teens will appreciate it as much. Make sure you ask everyone what they want to do and find something to suit everyone. Younger kids tend to prefer areas where they can play and older ones love the thrills at the theme park. This is a family vacation and everyone should have their say on what they want to do.

Have a Budget and Stick to it:

The final point is a practical way to enjoy your holiday and not feel the post-vacation blues when you return home and realize just how much you’ve actually spent. Set a daily budget and stick to it as much as possible. It’s OK to spend a little extra, but if you do go overboard, the little extras quickly add up when there are three or four of you.

The Takeaway Message:

Los Angeles is a great place to spend a family vacation. Plan ahead and ask everyone what they want to do and see. And don’t forget to have at least one day around the pool or beach to relax!
